Our dedicated Medical team at the Jajja George Health Centre is led by Dr Ezra who holds a Batchelor of Science Degree in Nursing, Nurse Joan who is a fully qualified Enrolled midwife and Nurse Tiberius who is a fully qualified Enrolled Nurse.
Dr Ezra works with us 3 days per week and also works at the Referal Hospital in Kampala which gives him valuable skills to bring to our patients. Nurses Joan and Tiberius are with us full time.
They care for all our staff and pupils as the need arises and are always on hand to administer treatment. Locals from the community attend medical days or come to the Health Centre when they need treatment or for those who are not able to reach us, Dr Ezra has a car for visiting patients around the local villages or if patients need taking to the local Hospital for further treatment that is not available in our Health Centre.
Patients are asked to make a contribution of between £2.00 and £5.00 depending on teh treatment and medication given to them.
Malaria is of course the most prevelent disesae there is and is the biggest problem we deal with at school. We have had children in high numbers in beds, and on the floor being treated for malaria. They are given tablets , injections and a drip which works very quickly and most are back to normal within 2 or 3 days. This medication costs £4.00 for the tablets and £8.00 for the injections.
The whole school is sprayed once a term with pesticides to help minmise the mosquitoes, this has proven to be very effective on the whole and all children have mosquito nets on their beds.
We hold free medical days in February when the team from the UK are
visiting. Dr Ian is one of our regular visitors from the UK and always helps out in the Health Centre on medical days and in the Eye clinic. These are very well attended and when the patients have seen Dr Ezra or the Nurses, they are given clothes, shoes, blankets and baby packs by the team.
Maternity days are always well attended when mothers come for Ante Natal or Post Natal care. They are weighed and seen by the Midwife to discuss any concerns they may have and given any medication they need. We have had many babies born in our Maternity unit. The mother to be comes with her Mother of Jajja (Grandmother) who stays with her during the birth until they are ready to go home. the carer brings in all the needs of the mother to be including food and drinks. Usually the next day the mother and baby will go home and it is always good to see them return for regular check ups. Mothers are asked to pay a contribution of £15.00 for delivery.
We recently welcomed Salim, who is a fully trained Opthamologist to our team. He visits the Health centre once a month to check on pupils, staff and anyone from the local community who has attended his clinic.
Salims mother was one of our original Nurses and he attended our School so it is good to welocme him back.
Salim checks for many differnt eye problems with one of the main ones being Red Eye or Conjunctivitis which of course would spread rapidly around the school, As they say, prevention is always better than cure so having these regular visits from Salim, we are preventing an outbreak of it. Anyone found with it are given relevent medication and isolated from others until the risk of contamination has passed.
Many locals still believe the old traditions of usuing herbs and plants to help with eye conditions which sadly leads to further problems including full blindness. We had one case where a child was given these herbal remedies and he lost his sight completely. He was given an operation to help but nothing worked for him. He stayed at our school for sometime but could no longer mange around the school and was missing out on full education. Thanks to the kindess of his Sponsor, he is now enjoying life in a specialsist School for the blind and is doing very well. We keep in touch with his school and make regular visits to check on his progress. The work Salim does is so importnt to prevent these things happening.
Regular eye tests are given with patients being given glasses or referred onto the main hospital for further treatment. Glasses are taken over from the UK to help cut costs to the patients. Salim treats the patients himself at the hospital where he does his main work so it is reassuring for the patients to see a familiar face.
One of the major problems amongst the elderly is Cateracts which involves an operation to remove them. Of course many struggle to pay the money needed for the operation so just go away, We help as many as possible for the sum of £107.00 per operation. They will then be given follow up appointments to check on their progress. Many sight loss problems can so easilly be prevented when people receive the correct testing and treatment.
